Feedback Debt

Why most CEOs are “tossed by the wind”

As a CEO, your greatest asset isn’t just your vision, it’s the information flowing into your office. We are told to “listen to our people” and “keep an open door.” So, we ask for feedback. We survey the team. We invite the critique.

But then, the wind starts blowing.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by fifty different suggestions, or felt the “guilt” of a suggestion box that has become a black hole, you are likely suffering from Feedback Debt.

The Trap: Listening vs. Processing

The biggest mistake I see high-level leaders make isn’t a lack of caring; it’s trying to do too much, too fast. We think that by asking everyone for their input, we are communicating value. But if you don’t have a system to close the loop, you aren’t listening. You’re just collecting noise.

In our C12 Business Forum this February, we dug into a counter-intuitive truth: the value of feedback isn’t the data; it’s the completion of the cycle.

Stop Solving, Start Cycling

When you start a feedback initiative, the “problems” surfaced are actually secondary. Your primary goal is to master the loop. A complete feedback cycle looks like this:

  1. Receive: Open the channel.
  2. Confirm: “This is what I heard you say. Did I get that right?”
  3. Act: Determine a course of action (even if that action is “not now”).
  4. Follow Up: Return to the source. “We did X. Did it help? What was the impact?”

If you skip Step 4, you haven’t finished the work. You are, as James 1:6 warns, like a wave of the sea, “driven and tossed by the wind.” Without a closed loop, you are simply reacting to the latest gust of opinion rather than steering the ship with integrity.

Moving Beyond “Good Ideas”

At C12, we don’t believe in adding more “guilt” to a CEO’s plate with light topics and no execution. We know that busy owners don’t need more information. They need tangible results.

That is why our model isn’t a brief check-in. It’s a full day of peer-board interaction followed by dedicated, professional coaching. We are incentivized to help you find the friction and kinks in your leadership system so you can lead with clarity and Kingdom-minded excellence.

Take the Next Step

Don’t let your leadership be tossed by the wind. Master the cycle of effective feedback alongside peers who understand the weight of the chair you sit in.
